LAWAS: A significant boost to infrastructure development is underway in the Limbang and Lawas regions, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

The Sarawak Government has allocated RM1.5 billion to the Northern Region Development Agency (NRDA) to accelerate these projects.

“These initiatives encompass essential infrastructure such as roads, bridges, electricity, and water supply systems, crucial for the local communities and spanning various sectors,” he said when officiating at the new Lawas District Education Office.

The Bukit Sari assemblyman also highlighted a RM160 million allocation for education development in the region, including the construction of the new district education headquarters and several schools.

While education is primarily a federal responsibility, Awang Tengah acknowledged the pressing issues facing Sarawak, such as deteriorating school conditions and inadequate housing for teachers.

He reiterated the state government’s commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government to address these challenges.

“Our Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has already pledged RM100 million towards school improvements, with the Education Department overseeing the implementation,” he added, urging for faster progress on these projects within the next 18 months.

He also stressed the importance of adding value to Sarawak’s natural resources through investments in education, human capital, creativity, and innovation.

“Education and skills are vital for Sarawak’s future. Despite achieving high-income economy status, there are still individuals living in poverty, relying on welfare programmes. We must ensure that improved infrastructure delivers tangible benefits to everyone,” he added.
