KUCHING: The state government is committed to helping the needy, especially single mothers.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said whichever grant or assistance provided by the government is to further assist them.

“In recognition of the credit worthiness of women, that is why I have announced to give RM1 million as ‘seed capital’ through the Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Ministry to assist more women in their small ventures,” he said during the Carnation Club of Kuching and Samarahan Division’s 10 anniversary dinner at a restaurant here on Friday.

Abang Johari was represented by Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.

He said the ‘seed capital’ was given last year with an initial allocation of RM500,000 which has resulted in some success stories.

“I believe this is the way to assist women. Like they say, rather than give them ‘fish’ I give them ‘fishing rod’ instead,” he said.

Meanwhile, Fatimah told the single mothers and fathers present at the dinner to take opportunity of the assistance provided by the state government.

“When I look at the data, not many Chinese single mothers have come forward to apply for the grant,” she said.

Fatimah also mentioned that the grant is not for any single race but for all women.

“Each application will receive business equipment worth RM5,000 as a start-up to venture in business.

On another note, Fatimah said the Carnation Club has showed its commitment and persistence in continuing to help and support its members.

“The club has also played a significant role in helping my ministry to carry out our programme.

“Therefore, I have also urged the club chairlady Magdeline Chong who is present here tonight to go rural and help more single mothers so that they are not left out.”

Former Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Karim, Sarawak Women and Family Development director Noriah Ahmad, political secretary to the Chief Minister Tan Kai, and Sheda Kuching branch chairman Sim Kiang Chok were among those present.
