SIBU: A total of 265 households in the Pelawan constituency, impacted by the unusual storm that struck the town on April 6, received natural disaster aid on Friday (Dec 8).
Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee said each household was provided with aid amounting to RM1,000.
“The aid aims to assist them in overcoming the losses incurred due to the rare natural disaster experienced in this part of the world,” he told the media at the aid handover ceremony at Swan Square.
Reflecting on the freak storm in April, Tiang, also the Pelawan assemblyman, noted that such a natural disaster, affecting not only Pelawan but also other constituencies in Sibu such as Bukit Assek and Nangka, had not occurred in decades.
In response, Tiang and other representatives of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) pledged to assist residents in applying for aid.
“We made a promise, and I’m pleased that this afternoon we have fulfilled our mission by distributing all this natural disaster aid to the affected residents.
“I sincerely thank all Pelawan residents for their patience as we worked out the procedure to apply for aid from the Sarawak government.”
Tiang extended his gratitude to all parties involved in collecting data and information, ensuring the aid reached the victims.
