GOOD news for all Sarawakian students in higher learning institutions nationwide as they will be eligible for RM1,200 in pocket money from the Sarawak government starting next year.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that the initiative will be provided regardless of the students’ family income.
“During the recent Lan Berambeh 2024, I announced a special financial assistance in the form of pocket money for tertiary students.
“In my Budget 2025 speech, I provided more details on this RM1,200 pocket money, which will be given to students from low-income groups with a household per capita income of RM1,500 or below.
“A few Honourable Members of this August House raised concerns about using per capita income as the eligibility criterion for this assistance.
“I have listened to these concerns, and I am pleased to announce that all Sarawakian students in higher learning institutions throughout Malaysia will be eligible, regardless of their family’s income,” he said when delivering his ministerial winding-up speech today (Nov 20).
Abang Johari, who is also the Finance and New Economy Minister, said that the pocket money initiative is the Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) commitment to ensuring the welfare of young talents is well cared for.
Earlier, he mentioned that Sarawakian students studying in higher learning institutions are the talent pipeline for the future and will be the main contributors to the advancement of the state.
“I want students to focus 100 per cent on their studies and not worry about sourcing enough funds for food or transportation,” he said.
