THE Sarawak government will provide RM1,200 in pocket money to its students as a special financial assistance measure for those studying in higher learning institutions across Malaysia next year.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that this initiative will benefit 25,000 Sarawakian students from lower-income families with a household per capita income of RM1,500 or below per month.
“The funds are intended for food and essential goods to help students manage the cost of living. A total of RM30 million has been allocated for this purpose in the 2025 Budget,” he said while tabling the second reading of the Sarawak Budget 2025 at the second meeting of the third session of the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) today.
Abang Johari, who also serves as the Finance and New Economy Minister, said to further relieve cost-of-living pressures for low- and middle-income groups, especially in managing educational expenses, two key initiatives launched in August will continue into 2025.
A sum of RM2 million will be allocated for book vouchers worth RM500 each for Sarawakian students attending public (IPTA) and private (IPTS) higher learning institutions. This assistance targets households with a per capita income of RM1,500 or below per month.
In addition, Sarawakian students from eligible households will receive free laptops upon successful enrolment into IPTA and IPTS institutions.
This initiative, aimed at empowering students with essential technology, is allocated RM30.5 million in 2025, benefiting an estimated 10,166 students.
Abang Johari also announced continued support for state-owned universities and colleges with annual operating grants. In 2025, the following allocations will be provided:
- University Technology Sarawak: RM35 million
- Sarawak Skills Development Centre: RM30 million
- i-CATS University College: RM30 million
- Kolej Laila Taib: RM5.5 million
And under the budget, RM27 million will be allocated to cover operational costs for three state-owned international schools. These include two fully operational schools in Petra Jaya, Kuching, and Mile 12 Kuching-Serian Road, along with a third international school located in Sib
