KUCHING: The recent announcement of RM1,200 in pocket money for Sarawakian students, regardless of their family’s income, has garnered widespread attention and sparked discussions across the state.
The initiative is aimed at alleviating financial challenges faced by students, providing them with adequate resources for daily needs and educational expenses.
By extending the programme to all students, irrespective of socioeconomic status, the government seeks to promote inclusivity and equal opportunities for academic achievement.
This policy is expected to have both immediate and long-term benefits, enhancing student welfare, academic performance and the overall educational landscape in Sarawak.
New Sarawak Tribune spoke to several students to gather their perspectives on this announcement.
Muhammad Nur Ammyrull Iswandi, 22, Student

“The RM1,200 pocket money will likely be distributed directly to students’ bank accounts or through their educational institutions to ensure accessibility. This allowance aims to support all students equally, ensuring no one is left behind, especially in a region like Sarawak, where significant economic disparities may exist.
The RM1,200 is intended to ease the cost of living for students, helping them cover essential expenses such as food, transportation, and study materials.”

“The distribution will be carried out through schools or universities in Sarawak, either in one lump sum or in monthly installments, depending on the government’s guidelines.
This initiative seeks to reduce the financial burden on students and their families, ensuring they can focus on education without worrying about basic living expenses. It also aims to encourage students to stay in school by alleviating financial pressures that might otherwise force them to drop out or delay their studies.”

Muhd Aniq Izuddin Nazri, 19, Student

“Students will be notified through official channels on how to claim or receive the RM1,200 allowance, either through a registration process or via direct bank transfers.
By offering the allowance to all students, the government hopes to create a level playing field for education, encouraging more students to pursue higher education without financial limitations.
This allowance is expected to enhance the overall educational experience and increase the number of students completing their studies in Sarawak.”
