SIMANGGANG: A RM140-million raw water transfer project will soon take place in Sri Aman Division.

According to Utilities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, the project was approved during the State Development Coordination Committee Meeting on ‘Projek Rakyat’ at Sri Simanggang Hotel here, yesterday.

When interviewed, Rundi explained the facility would transfer water from Batang Lupar and Batang Ai all the way to Undop River.

“Sungai Undop (Undop River) is too small to meet the needs of Bayai Water Treatment Plant. We are upgrading the plant from 33 megalitres per day (MLD) to 53MLD, so with that, we need bigger sources of water,” he said.

With three rivers supplying water to the plant, water shortage would not be a problem even during dry weather.

Rundi said the raw water transfer project would proceed after proper studies had been done.

“We are currently doing studies on raw water transfer and Bayai upgrading process is 60 per cent completed.

“Components of the project include increasing and enhancing water intake, upgrading water treatment plant, and replacing all pipes,” said Rundi.

The project is set to be completed in three years’ time.
