KUCHING: Sarawak Sepak Takraw Association (PSS) will hold two mega tournaments, namely Sarawak PEKEMA Cup 2017 Sepak Takraw Championship (Team-Open) and Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup Edition I 2017 sepak takraw championship.

PSS president, Dato’ Sri Abang Khalid Tan Sri Abang Marzuki said the Sarawak PEKEMA Cup 2017 Sepak Takraw Championship (Team Open) will be held in Sibu from July 21 to 23.

According to him, the tournament is open to any clubs throughout the state.

“Our side welcome the participation of any clubs from around the state to participate in this tournament,” he said at a press conference at his office, recently.

Also present were deputy president of PSS, Dato Haji Ismail Abang Saufi and other executive members of PSS.

Dato’ Sri Abang Khalid firmly said it only targeted 40 teams for the tournament.

“The champions will receive a cash prize of RM5,000, a trophy and medals.

“The runners-up will receive a cash prize of RM3,000, trophy and medals while jolnt third placings will get a cash prize of RM1,500 medals for the losing semi-finalists,” he added.

However, four teams who were knocked out in the quarter-finals will also receive a cash prize of RM500 each.

The championship is organised in collaboration with the Sibu Division Sepak Takraw Association.

The closing ceremony and prizes presentation will be officiated by the
Assistant Minister of Education and Technological Research, who is also the Assistant Minister of Housing and Public Health, Dr Annuar Rapa’ee is expected to officiate at the closing ceremony and prizes presentation.

Meanwhile, the Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup Edition I 2017 Sepak Takraw Championship will be held at Stadium Bandaraya Miri from August 3 to 6.

“This tournament can be deemed to be of international level because we will invite teams from countries such as Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Brunei Darussalam.

“In addition, it will be participate by teams from all across Sarawak, Peninsular, Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) and the PDRM,” he said.

He also thanked the Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Abang Haji Johari Tun Openg and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports, Datuk Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah for the support given to hold the tournament.

“For this tournament (Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup), all teams can field at least two import players,” he said, adding that the tournament will likely see the national team who will compete in the SEA Games Kuala Lumpur 2017.

Attractive prizes await to the winners, where the champion team will receive a cash prize of RM15,000, a challenge trophy, a trophy and medals.

The second place will receive a cash prize of RM10,000, a trophy and medals.

For two teams that lost in the semi-finals will receive a cash prize of RM5,000.

Meanwhile,four teams that lost in the quarter-finalswill receive a cash prize of RM1,000 each.

Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports, Datuk Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah is expected to officiate the opening ceremony on August 3.

The closing ceremony and prize is expected to be officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Haji Johari on August 6.
