SEMATAN: Sarawak needs RM17 billion to comprehensively upgrade its healthcare facilities, said Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni.

“This includes not just replacing clinics, but also overall improvements to healthcare facilities across the state,” he told reporters after attending the Jelajah Agenda Nasional Malaysia Sihat (ANMS) Series 1 programme for Lundu District and the ASEAN Dengue Day Celebration for Kuching Division 2024 at Rumah Panjang Kampung Pueh here on today.

The substantial sum reflects the significant improvements needed, with 206 clinics in Sarawak currently classified as dilapidated.

“Thankfully, 39 of these clinics have already received an allocation of RM19 million for upgrades this year,” he said.

Lukanisman acknowledged the challenges ahead, particularly the multi-year nature of such a project.
“The RM17 billion figures may span several Malaysia Plans,” he said.

Upgrading staff quarters, especially in remote areas, is another priority.

“Clinics like KK Singai in Bau require complete demolition and rebuilding due to their poor state,” he said.
Lukanisman also provided an update on the Petra Jaya Hospital project.

“Construction is over 70% complete, and we expect it to be fully operational by August 2025. Building a hospital is complex, unlike building a school, but progress is satisfactory. We anticipate reaching over 80% completion this year,” he added.
