SIBU: A man who attempted to flee from a police inspection after ramming into a police car recently was today (Jan 19) fined RM1,800 in default one month’s jail by the Magistrate’s Court here.

Magistrate Oon Kork Chern meted out the sentence after Akmal, 23, from Jalan Oya pleaded guilty to the charge.

The accused was charged with voluntarily obstructing Corporal Hussien Othman from discharging his duties when the former fled the scene at Jalan Lau King Howe on Jan 13 at 9.15 pm.

He committed an offence punishable under Section 186 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term which may extend to two years or a fine of up to RM10,000 or both upon conviction.

Prosecuting officer ASP Linggi Tawi told the court that when the complainant and his team approached the accused by the roadside at Jalan Lau King Howe, Muhammad Nur suddenly reversed his car and fled from the scene.

Due to the accused’s action, the stationary police car was damaged.

Police gave chase and finally intercepted Muhammad Nur at Jalan Quarry.

ASP Linggi said the accused claimed the sudden approach of the policemen caused him to panic and flee.

Police investigation revealed that the accused had stopped his car by the roadside. His girlfriend was also with him.

Police approached the car as it was parked at a deserted and dark area.

The accused, who was not represented by a legal counsel, paid the fine.
