SIBU: An unemployed man was today (Sept 21) slapped with a RM1,800 fine in default two months’ jail by a Magistrates’ Court here for stealing a portable speaker.
Haidi Lee, 28, from Sungai Naman, had pleaded guilty to the charge read out to him before Magistrate Mohd Syukri Mokhtar.
He committed an offence under Section 379 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both upon conviction.
The court heard that the accused had stolen the speaker from Cassidy Mandau, 27, on Aug 30 at about 8.40pm. He removed the speaker from a rented room on the first floor of a building in Jalan Channel.
Cassidy only released the theft on Sept 9 at about 4pm, and wasted no time in lodging a police report.
Acting on information on Sept 12 at about 6.50pm, a police team led by Inspector Kumareswaran arrested two suspects at the riverside of Rajang Promenade in Jalan Maju.
Haidi later led police to the place where he kept the stolen item.
