KUCHING: Police seized almost RM1million worth of illegally trafficked medicines during a raid on an illegal laboratory in a house at Jalan Stutong Stampin Baru here.
The 11th Battalion, General Operations Force (PGA) commanding officer Supt Rosdi Inai said a 42-year-old caretaker of the house was arrested in the ‘Ops Libas’ raid.
“The illicit medicines estimated to be worth over RM957,800 is believed to have been smuggled into the state from China.
“The police team raided the house believed to be a repository and processing laboratory at around 4pm. Upon further checks, we found medicinal products stored and believed to be without the approval of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP).
“Based on the information obtained, the illicit medicines are believed to have been processed at the premises for the local market,” he said in a statement yesterday.
He said the suspect was handed over to the Kuching district police headquarters for further action, while, the seized items and paraphernalia were handed over to the Health Ministry for r investigation under the Poisons Act 1952 and Sale of Drugs Act 1952.
Rosdi advised the public not to be fooled by any form of unauthorised medicines in the market, even if the prices offered are cheaper to avoid any untoward incident from happening.
“I also urge the community to always cooperate and channel information to the authorities especially the police to curb crime activities.”
