MIRI: In conjunction with its 20th anniversary this year, Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) is offering outstanding students in Miri a special category of scholarships for studies in its foundation programmes and selected degree programmes.
The foundation programmes are in science and engineering, commerce and arts while the degree programmes are the Bachelor of Computing (both cyber security and software engineering streams) and Bachelor of Science in Construction Management.
SPM, STPM, O-Level, A-Level and UEC leavers from both urban and rural schools who meet the selection criteria are encouraged to apply for the Curtin Malaysia 20th Anniversary Scholarships worth a total of RM2.5 million before March 29 or Aug 16 (for foundation programmes) and August 2 (for degree programmes).
Applicants must be Malaysians who have completed their study in schools in Miri Division and are not holding any other scholarships. They must apply with their actual examination results, attaching copies of other supporting documents to their applications.
They are also required to have a letter of offer from the university to pursue a foundation or relevant undergraduate programme. Successful foundation recipients must continue their study with Curtin Malaysia for at least another year, whilst successful degree recipients must complete the first two years of their programmes at Curtin Malaysia.
Curtin Malaysia’s deputy pro vice-chancellor Professor Beena Giridharan said the scholarships, which were launched by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg last January, are designed to help outstanding students fulfil their aspirations for higher studies and pursue a quality education with Curtin Malaysia, the largest international campus of Curtin University.
She said the scholarships are also aimed at giving back to the local community for the support it has given to the university since its establishment in 1999.
“Through the scholarships, we aim to improve access and equity for academically high achieving students from lower socio-economic backgrounds to high-quality tertiary education, which might otherwise be beyond their financial means,” said Giridharan.
“At the same time, we are also offering them the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get a truly world-class education with Curtin, which is ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide in the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2018.
“At Curtin Malaysia, they will have the opportunity to study with students from over 50 countries and be taught by lecturers from some 20 different countries. It will be a very international experience for them, and one that is right at their doorstep,” she added.
The Curtin Malaysia 20th Anniversary Scholarships follows after Curtin Malaysia Foundation Scholarships worth RM2 million which were awarded to more than 110 deserving scholars from high-achieving Miri schools in 2018.
In addition to the 20th Anniversary Scholarships, Curtin Malaysia continues to offer Curtin Malaysia Merit Scholarships with significant tuition fee waivers to academically meritorious domestic and international students applying to study at the campus. First introduced in 2015, over RM25 million worth of these scholarships have been awarded to students from all walks of life.
