MUKAH: The Church of St Anthony in Kampung Tellian Ulu will be rebuilt for RM2 million.

Councillor Felix Pieng, a representative of Tellian assemblyman Yussibnosh Balo, handed over a cheque for RM 2 million to the chairman of the Church of St Anthony Kampung Tellian, Selahat Sera.

The ceremony was witnessed by Father Joseph Sabastian and Penghulu Bonaventure Juana.

Yussibnosh, in his statement, said that the church committee would take care of the design of the new church which would be built near the old church.

“The application to build a new church was made years ago by the church committee.

“We are very fortunate that the state government is concerned about our well-being; Sarawak is the only state with a designated body for the interests of other religions under Unifor,” he added.

Yussibnosh, who also represented the Christian population in Kampung Tellian, thanked Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg for the RM2 million grant.

“The old Church of St Anthony could only hold 80 people at a time and was made of wood. That is why we needed to rebuild it,” he said.
