THE Sarawak government allocated RM240.2 million to host the Malaysia Games (Sukma) Sarawak, complimenting the additional RM50 million contribution from the federal government.

Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah revealed that RM143 million, the largest portion of the budget, was earmarked for the overall organisation of the event.

While RM70 million was allocated for upgrading and modernising sports facilities across the state, the remaining funds had been dedicated to athlete preparations, including the provision of sports equipment and training camps.

He noted that hosting Sukma is a major endeavour requiring meticulous planning and substantial resources to ensure its success.

“The overall budget for the event is carefully divided across various categories to ensure comprehensive development and a high-quality experience for all participants.

“The upgraded facilities will not only serve the needs of the Sukma Games but will also leave a legacy for future athletes and the local community.

“This strategic investment reflects the government’s commitment to the development of sports in the nation and the positive impact the games will have on the local community, athletes, and the country.”

Abdul Karim said this during his ministerial winding-up speech, Tuesday (Nov 19).

Sarawak, hosting Sukma for the third time, had also secured RM13.2 million in sponsorships—both cash and in-kind—from local, national, and international companies.

Abdul Karim acknowledged the strong support from 30 sponsors and six official partners, attributing the event’s success to collaborative efforts by federal and state committees.

He said that the involvement of sponsors and partners had not only increased awareness but also attracted future investments, contributing to Sarawak’s economy well beyond the event.

“Their support has made Sukma Sarawak one of the most successful editions, reinforcing the importance of sports, unity, and community development.

“Looking ahead, we aim to continue these partnerships to further develop sports in Sarawak.”
