KUCHING: Work has begun on erecting the tallest flagpole in the country at the Fort Margherita area here.
The RM28 million project is expected to be completed by the end of November this year.
Deputy Minister of Utility and Communication II (Utility) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said its construction was now ahead of schedule.
“The flagpole project is 7.02 per cent ahead of schedule,” he told New Sarawak Tribune.
Abdul Rahman, who is also the minister in charge of Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) said the actual cost of the project amounted to RM28 million.
Meanwhile, it was learnt that DBKU is the implementing agency of the flagpole project while the design and build contractor is KKB Engineering Berhad.
According to the Office of the Premier of Sarawak the project is funded by the private sector and not the Sarawak government.
It said the project is a corporate social responsibility (CSR) contribution in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of Sarawak as a party to the formation of Malaysia.
The flagpole will become part of the tourism infrastructure in the city, it added.
“Hopefully, it will become an inspiration for all Sarawakians to serve Sarawak,” it said earlier.
