KUCHING: Taman Sri Wangi will have a new mosque costing RM3.47mil by 2021.
Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman said the mosque would be built on about 0.5 acres, with a two-storey structure.
The mosque can fit about 1,000 people and is equipped with an imam (mosque leader) room, meeting room, multipurpose space, wudhu (Islamic purification) place, kitchen, PA (public address) system room and store.
“The mosque construction committee has done the early works such as discussion with Land and Survey Department, and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) in the preliminary stages prior to the approval of the allocation.
“At present, we have appointed the contractor and construction will start on Jan 29 next week,” he told reporters after launching the earth-breaking ceremony for the mosque at Taman Sri Wangi here, yesterday.
Fazzrudin also said among the construction process was the relocation of the futsal court as the mosque would be occupying the land.
“We have identified a new location for the futsal court and it has already been built,” he said.
“Meanwhile, the old mosque will be maintained for recreational activities and other purposes.”
He also shared that back in 2018, he and Petra Jaya MP Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof had met Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg to discuss on the matter, in which the latter then approved the allocation for the construction of the mosque.
Consultants involved in the project are NBL Architects Sdn Bhd (architect), Perunding Azra (civil and structure), Azmar Engineers Sdn Bhd (mechanical and engineering) and Juruukur Bahan Tema Sdn Bhd (quantity surveyor).
Also present at the ceremony were DBKU deputy director (infrastructure services) Mohamad Faisal Adenan and new mosque construction committee chairman Sharkawi Mohamad Dora.
