KUCHING: Evacuation of about 1,000 villagers residing at Sungai Bako will be a better option as the river deteriorates due to strong water current and soil erosion.
Three houses in Kampung Bako Hulu collapsed into the river recently which added up to 10 houses affected in the area.
In an interview, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said that the evacuation would be a long-term solution as oppose to constructing an embankment.
“If we were to build this embankment with the highest quality using the sheet pile method, it would cost up to RM20 million.
“However, this would not contribute to the expansion of the village. If we evacuate the affected villagers to a new location away from the river, it would definitely be better for their livelihood for another 100 years.
“With the Bako Bridge expected to be completed sometime early next year, this would be the most strategic place to move them. Of course we need to build a new housing area to resettle the villagers,” Junaidi said after a visit to the affected area at Kampung Bako Ulu, yesterday.
The minister also said that the villagers are keen to be resettled.
“The Village chief as well as the Bako Barisan Nasional (BN) chief wlll hold a dialogue session to identify what the villagers needs are.
“Decisions will be made based on the people’s needs as well. Once decided, I will bring the idea forward to Demak Laut Assemblyman, Dr Hazland Hipni and the Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg,” said Junaidi.
Junaidi also allocated a total of RM3 million from his ministry to build a 200-metre embankment as a short-term solution to reduce soil erosion, especially at Kampung Bako Hulu.
“The embankment will also be further strengthened with rocks and the project will start immediately,” said Junaidi.
