2020 State Budget
A total of RM330.4 million has been allocated for the development of the State’s tourism industry under the 2020 State Budget.
In announcing this, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said a sum of RM 12.4 million would be provided for the restoration and conservation efforts of five fortresses by next year to further enhance tourism in the state.
“The five fortresses are Fort Hose in Marudi, Fort Lily in Betong, Fort Emma in Kanowit, Fort Brooke in Julau and Fort Sylvia in Kapit,” he said.
Because of the vital role of intangible heritage in creating a cultured and knowledgeable society, Abang Johari said a sum of RM134.1 million would be allocated for the development of such projects.
Places of attractions to be set up and upgraded would include the Sarawak Museum Campus and Heritage Trail, Santubong Archaeological Park and Wallace Centre, Miri Petroleum Museum and Brooke Dockyard Maritime Museum, he explained.
The chief minister also allocated RM65.9 million for the construction and upgrading of a few proposed tourism projects.
“These projects include the Performing Arts Centre infrastructure at the old DUN building and infrastructure development at Gunung Mulu National Park.
“They also include the beautification of Kuching Waterfront from Kampung Boyan to Fort Margherita, construction of a jetty and other facilities at Santubong for the Kuching Wetland National Park and upgrading facilities at Niah National Park,” he said.
Asserting his continuous support for international events in Sarawak, the chief minister also allocated RM118 million for promotional and marketing activities.
He named the events as the iconic Rainforest World Music Festival, Asean International Film Festival and Award, Borneo Jazz Festival and Sarawak Regatta.
“These events can accelerate tourist arrivals in the State,” he pointed out.
