SIBU: Registered voters in Pelawan are in for a surprise.
The Pelawan Service Centre launched two community programmes in conjunction with its official opening yesterday (March 11).
One, newly married couples will receive RM500, and two, newborns will receive RM300 each.
Pelawan assemblyman Michael Tiang Ming Tee, who is Public Health, Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister, said the RM500 incentive was to ease the financial burden of the newlyweds.
“It’s a wedding gift from us and also to encourage young people to get married. And we understand newlyweds face financial challenges (so the incentive will be of some help),” he said in his speech.
To be eligible for the incentive, either one of the couple must be a registered Pelawan voter. And only those who get married this year onwards will be considered.
As for the RM300 incentive for newborn babies, Tiang said it was an angpow to welcome the new arrival.
“We want to offer a little help to the young family so we give them RM300 for their baby as an angpaw to welcome the baby.” he said.
The only condition for the incentive is that either of the parents must be a registered voter in Pelawan. And only babies born from this year onwards will be considered.
On the service centre, Tiang said newly appointed community leaders would take turns to assist the public.
The centre, situated at Lorong Sungai Merah, 2F, is open from 8am to 5pm on Monday to Friday and 8am-12pm on Saturday. It is closed on Sunday and public holidays.
Among those present at the launching were Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek and Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh.
