BAU: Good news for the local community here. The Sarawak government has approved an allocation of RM55 million for the construction of a new road from Kampung Suba Buan and Kampung Suba leading to Bau town.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said he has directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to design the 3-kilometre (km) road in accordance with R3 standards. The project will also include the construction of a bridge.

“With the new road, it will pave the way for more development, including new settlements for residents here who are frequently affected by floods,” he said.

He was speaking at the opening ceremony of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Suba Buan new building on Saturday (Aug 17).

Abang Johari said the Sarawak government is committed to producing knowledgeable Sarawakians who can contribute to the state’s ongoing economic development.

“When I took over as the Chief Minister (now Premier), I set up a special ministry for education to strengthen the education sector in the state,” he said.

He said despite the education matter falling under the jurisdiction of the federal government, the special ministry created can help address any shortcomings, particularly in terms of funding.

“Under the present Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Education Ministry, it has been agreed that Sarawak advanced RM100 million to upgrade dilapidated schools in the state, which will be reimbursed by the federal government later.

“In addition, the state government has given another RM100 million for health, particularly to upgrade dilapidated clinics in the state,” he said.

Later, when speaking to reporters, he said he supported the idea proposed by Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep that a Form 6 College and a Vocational or Technical Secondary School be established in Bau.

“As I mentioned earlier, our students are very good at hydrogen; they already understand the basic principles.

“So, what we need to do is just enhance their knowledge, as the basic knowledge is already there. Then, they can apply and expand it at the degree level.

“Secondly, we want our students to gain an understanding of space technology, particularly the sensors used in space

“Therefore, we will open a new faculty focused on space. This space study is related to avionics chips. Avionics chips are used by satellites. Satellites are storage devices for data,” he said.

He said the students must learn new fields in line with the state’s current policies and needs.
