RM5k fine for illegal online gambling

SIBU: A 48-year-old man was fined RM5,000, in default three months’ imprisonment, by the Magistrates’ Court here for illegal online gambling.

Magistrate Mohd Syukri handed down the sentence after the accused pleaded no contest to the charge.

According to the charge sheet, Ho Boon Liang from Jalan Aman here was found to be involved in soliciting the public to participate in gambling in contravention to Section 6 of the Common Gaming House Act 1953, using the mobile phone as medium.

 The offence committed at Channel Road at about 2.15pm on Dec 10 last year, was framed under Section 4(1)(c) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953 and punishable under Section 4(1) of the same Act.

Under the Section, upon conviction, an offender is liable to a fine of between RM5,000 and RM50,000 and shall also be punished with imprisonment of up to three years, and in addition shall also be liable to a fine of not less than RM5,000 and not more than RM50,000 for every gaming machine seized.
