KUCHING: An additional RM7 million in state funding is needed to complete the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry Rejuvenation Project in Batu Kawah.
Deputy Premier and Batu Kawa assemblyman Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the extra funds are crucial for the project’s second phase, which will involve lighting, a walkway, and facilities for rock climbing and other activities.
“The quarry area is quite dark at night due to the banks and trees. The additional funding will allow us to illuminate the area and create a safer and more inviting space,” he said during the official opening of the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry Multipurpose Hall today (Oct 28).
Dr Sim said the project was approved before the 2020 Movement Control Order.
“This long-abandoned quarry has been transformed into a valuable community asset, hosting events like Chinese New Year celebrations, extra classes, and concerts. It’s a testament to the positive impact of such developments,” he said.
The 19,375-square-foot multipurpose hall can accommodate up to 1,000 people.
“We plan to build a public recreational park to enhance the city’s landscape and boost tourism,” he added.
In February, he announced plans to develop a 20-acre recreational park as an extension of the project’s first phase.
The overall plan encompasses 60 acres, including 40 acres of private land owned by the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry.
The multi-phase project aims to stimulate Kuching’s socio-economic growth by creating a water theme park, jogging and cycling paths, artificial rock climbing walls, and other recreational facilities.
