KUCHING: The Stakan River Flood Mitigation Plan, valued at RM7,460,304, will expand the drainage area from three metres to 12 metres at a depth of 36 feet.
Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang said the project was the first effort to enlarge the drainage system involving the Stakan river to prevent floods.
According to him, the location of the Sungai Semenggoh bridge was chosen to control excess water starting from the downstream area as it became the flow centre to the Stakan river route, Batu 7 market waters, Pan Borneo route, and also the original tributaries nearby.
“The project through the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) will enlarge the Stakan river drainage drain to 12 meters with a height of 36 feet, where the drain walls are formed using concrete, thus preventing soil subsidence and collapse.
“This project has already been discussed in the MPP meeting on Thursday (May 12) so we came to the location to see for ourselves the progress which was handed over to the contractor on April 11 and which was expected to be fully completed in the next two years,” he said when met by reporters at the Semenggoh bridge, Stakan, here, yesterday (May 13).
He hoped the drainage problem in the Stakan area would receive attention and be able to obtain the appropriate allocation to improve the drainage system in the area.
He further said such projects were able to control floods, water reservoir problems due to heavy rains and help control water retention as well as protect the surrounding areas from floods.
