KUCHING: In conjunction with the 84th birthday celebration of the Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud at Masjid India Bandar on Oct 9, the police will close roads and create detours around the venue.
District police chief, ACP Awang Din Awang Gani said the celebration would be graced by Taib and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Ragad Kurdi Taib. Also present would be Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and wife, Datuk Amar Jumaani Tun Tuanku Bujang, state cabinet ministers and other dignitaries.
“Some 400 people are expected to turn up. To ensure that the programme runs smoothly, the police will conduct road closures and diversions starting from 5pm until the end of the celebration around 10.30pm.
“The roads involved are Jalan Masjid Bahagian/Jalan Market, Jalan Lebuh Java, Jalan Khoo Hun Yeang and Jalan Gambier.
“Invited guests are advised to park on the left side of Jalan Gambier or at the parking space of Polyclinic Jalan Masjid,” he said in a statement today.
However, he pointed out the road closures and diversions would depend on the evaluation of traffic flows by the traffic police officers on duty to ensure that they would not cause trouble for other road users.
He also requested for all parking boxes on the left side of Jalan Gambier to be emptied starting 4.30pm to give way for the programme.
Awang Din further advised members of the public to obey the traffic rules at all times.
“Actions will be taken to those who refuse to follow the instructions of traffic police officers on duty,” he said.
