Road closures planned for New Year countdown event in Kuching

KUCHING: The Kuching District police headquarters is set to implement strategic road closures and diversions during the New Year countdown event at Kuching Waterfront here tomorrow (Dec 31).

Kuching deputy police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said the road closures will occur in two phases to facilitate the smooth flow of the event.

The initial phase, starting at 7am, will affect Jalan Gambir, Jalan Lebuh Java and Jalan Gambir towards Jalan Lebuh Java.

Subsequently, from 4pm until 1am, additional closures will be implemented along vital routes such as Susur Jalan Lebuh Wayang to Jalan Main Bazaar, Jalan Main Bazaar traffic light towards Jalan Temple, Susur Jalan Temple to Jalan Wayang, Susur Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg to Jalan Barrack and Entry from Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg towards Jalan Pearl to Jalan Wawasan.

Merbin urged attendees not to park vehicles along the roadside to prevent traffic disruptions, adding that multiple public parking spaces have been designated at Medan Pelita, Dewan Suarah, Sarawak Plaza and other convenient locations.

Residents and businesses around the Kuching Waterfront area are also urged to plan their routes in advance and follow alternative paths, adhering to instructions from on-duty officers or police personnel.

In tandem with the celebration, Merbin said the headquarters will conduct a Joint Crime Prevention Operation alongside a focus on Anti-Drink Driving Operations to ensure safety during the celebration.
