SERIAN: A weekend road trip turned tragic for a mother and her two children when their vehicle skidded and plunged into a ravine along Jalan Kuching-Sri Aman yesterday (Sept 29).

The accident, involving a Proton Persona, occurred around 10.30 am at KM95 of the highway.

According to Serian police chief DSP Neil Beginda, the 46-year-old mother was driving her children back to Kuching after visiting their village in Betong.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a metal road divider before plunging into the ravine.

“As a result, the mother suffered a broken left arm, while her 13-year-old daughter, seated in the front passenger seat, escaped injuries.

“Tragically, her eight-year-old son, Eric Dwayne Beji, who was in the back seat, sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from Serian Hospital,” he said when contacted.

The vehicle was badly damaged, particularly in the front and rear.

Meanwhile, according to the Fire and Rescue Department’s (Bomba) report, passers-by rescued the mother and her daughter from the wreckage before firefighters from Serian station arrived.

The team later used a crowbar to extricate the boy from the back seat before handing his body over to the police.
