KUCHING: Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Betong parliamentary seat, Robert Lawson Chuat is confident in filling the ‘big shoes’ left by his predecessor Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
He added that he was aware of the challenges, especially as his predecessor, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas had done a good job and have also served in many capacities in different ministries.
“For a new comer to fill in that very big shoes, is a big challenge, but he is still there to advise and guide me and I will follow him because the area (parliamentary) is bigger than the one that I am used to look after such as Saribas, Bukit Saban and Layar.
“Well, I am not totally new, given the task that I used to do 10 years ago, for two terms, I will not say it is easy, but more or less I know what it is,” said Robert after attending the handing over of letters of appointment to contest as BN candidate in the coming election by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg held in Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) headquarters at Jalan Bako here, on Wednesday.
Robert also expressed his gratitude to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for having faith and trust in him by picking his as a BN candidate for Betong.
He also pointed out that he would continue with the development agendas and other plans that his predecessor have implemented.
“I will carry on all the on-going development projects until they are completed and of course I will work in line with the state and national (BN) manifesto.
“It (manifesto) will be our guide in this election and also after the election,” he said.
On another matter, Robert cautioned that racial issues should not be manipulated to gain votes during the election as it would tarnish the existing unity among Sarawakians.
He said it is dangerous to resort to racial issues in Sarawak.
“You will get the votes but it will destroy the prevailing unity and peace. Play a fair game and do not resort to racial issues, because in BN we are multiracial.
“I am not implying anybody, just that the issue is something that people will easily use during the election period,” he said.
