KUCHING: Malaysian Technology Development Cooperation (MTDC) plans to implement robotic technology in the manufacturing of kek lapis Sarawak.
Its chief executive officer Datuk Norhalim Yunus said the effort was aimed at helping SME entrepreneurs in Sarawak to increase their productivity.
“The demand for kek lapis Sarawak is indeed soaring in the fasting month but due to labour limitations, kek lapis manufacturers can only produce a limited number of cakes because they take time to be baked.
“In addition to the labour force, the lack of kitchen appliances such as oven is also a setback,” he said.
He said MTDC had invited some experts to visit a kek lapis factory and they planned to hold a national-level competition which will include robotic element in making cakes.
“Through the latest discussions, the competition is scheduled to be held in early October in Kuala Lumpur in conjunction with the MTDC Conference.
“We will also provide prize money for the winners,” he said, adding that with the presence of robotic technology, it will help entrepreneurs to double their products.
Norhalim assured that the technology will not displace human labour.
