BEKENU: The problem of coastal and river erosion in Bekenu requires immediate attention to avoid environmental damage, said Deputy Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Rosey Yunus.

She said the problem was quite serious, especially in Tusan Beach, and hoped the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) would study the problem and find solutions.

“Coastal erosion happens swiftly, particularly in Tusan Beach, one of the tourist destinations in Bekenu.

“This erosion needs to be given serious attention because we are concerned about its impact on existing buildings,” she said after visiting flash flood areas and coastal erosion on Wednesday (May 11).

Among the areas visited were Kampung Menjelin, Kampung Angus Ria, Pantai Tusan, Pantai Bungai, Kampung Kayu Kapor and Kampung Jenggalas.

Rosey said coastal erosion also occurred in Pantai Bungai and Pantai Kuala Sibuti.

“This area is a settlement and tourism area. Erosion happens quickly and it affects the courtyard area,” she said.

At the same time, she said several areas were frequently flooded due to the poor drainage system and waterways.

“I hope the DID can think and find a solution to prevent flash floods and resolve the issue of stagnant water,” she added.

Also present were state DID director Ahmad Denney Ahmad Fauzi, Miri DID head Hiew Si Tien, Subis District Office administrative officer James Jam Jolly, and a representative of the Subis District Council.
