KOTA SAMARAHAN: Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang has warned civil servants against sweeping mistakes under the carpet  just to safeguard their department’s image.

She said this was unethical and should not be done by any head of agency or department.

According to her, in carrying out duties, mistakes are bound to happen, but that these should not be covered up, rather action should be taken to improve the situation.

“If there is a mistake or deficiency, admit it and take the right action to correct it,” said Rubiah who is Kota Samarahan MP.

“Only in this way, can can maintain our integrity, ensure the system we run continues to be trusted and held in high esteem by the community.

“Remember, hiding mistakes will only make things worse. On the other hand, with transparency and the courage to correct mistakes, we will strengthen the public’s trust in the agencies and public services we represent.”

Rubiah said this at the Encouraging Responsibility Accountability Trustworthiness (ERAT) Programme by the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) at the Farmers’ Association Hall, here on Saturday.

She explained EAIC’s important role in fighting misconduct among law enforcement.

She said the government had given the commission authority since 2009 to monitor and investigate the actions of law enforcement officers and federal enforcement agencies under Act 700.

“This task is important to ensure that officers act within the limits of their powers and laws.

“With the existence of a supervisory function like EAIC, we can increase the public’s trust and confidence in enforcement agencies,” she said.

Also present at the programme were the Chairman of the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) Dr Ismail Bakar and Samarahan Resident Officer, Mohammad Irwan Bahari Bujang.
