BINTULU: Sarawak government has given its commitment to increase the state’s income so that one day there will be no more terminology of interior areas, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Abang Johari, who is also the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president, said for that, his party would continue to strive to increase the state’s income and revenue through various approaches so that it can finance the infrastructure and development projects in all corners of the state.
“Our intention of the top leaders of PBB is that one day there will no longer be the terminology of interior area (in Sarawak). This is because all areas in the interior have been connected by roads, and have sufficient electricity and water supply.
“This means that we have a comprehensive development in the various areas in Sarawak, including the interior,” he said.
He said this to reporters in a press conference after officiating at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) 2023 Northern Zone Special Convention at Bintulu Civic Centre here today (Oct 15).
Abang Johari, who is also the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman, said the northern areas that were lacking in terms of road infrastructure, electricity and water supply would continue to be improved and developed.
“In addition, we know that the land in northern areas of Sarawak for example in Bekenu, Baram, Ba’kelalan, Limbang and Lawas is very fertile and has high potential.
“Therefore, it will continue to be developed with the cooperation of the state government and also Brunei.
“This is our ongoing effort to boost the state’s economy so that all development agendas, especially in the northern region, can be realised for the well-being of the people,” he said.
He added that for this reason it was very important for grassroots leaders to understand the direction and plans of the Sarawak government until 2030.
“Grassroots leaders must also understand the new economy that uses new technology which can boost the strength of the resources available in the area concerned.
“I see that if we have talent, Sarawakians who have the latest knowledge, we are also able to succeed in our plan,” he said.
Abang Johari, also said Sarawak wants to give free tertiary education to children for further studies at Sarawak-owned universities by 2026.
“This is our way forward to help less fortunate families and change their fate,” he said.
He also emphasised that all industries in the state must also utilise the latest technology and thus indeed needed the skilled and expert Sarawakians.
