KUCHING: An interim court order has been enacted to thwart potential disturbances amid rumours of a rally slated for tomorrow (Oct 17) in Sibu.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri in a press conference, confirmed that they had received information suggesting an impending rally would be held at the Sibu Court.
Hence, in accordance with Section 98 of the Criminal Procedure Code, a temporary restraining order aimed at preventing gatherings during situations of disorder, has been enforced for a seven-day period from Oct 17 until 23.
“The order explicitly prevent the presence of the following eight nominees to attend the supposed rally – Mathew Mudai Umpi, Jonas Ling Lee King, Andrew Lau Chii Chuong, Alistair Lau Chii Kiat, Chua Yieng Hui, Lawrence Clement Ahsay, Napoleon Lawik, and Alim@Giovanni Adlim Mideh.
“Failure to adhere to this order is considered a violation under Section 188 of the Penal Code.
“If convicted, the violators could face an imprisonment for up to one month or a fine of up to RM400, or both.
“Should their actions jeopardize public safety or incite riots, the penalties could extend to imprisonment for up to six months or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both,” he said.
Mohd Azman strongly discouraged the public from participating in the rumoured rally, stressing that doing so may threaten public peace and order.
Additionally, the police will take decisive action against anyone attempting to instigate or encourage gatherings in the area or court premises.
This court order is said to have stemmed from the Kanowit riot incident that transpired on Sept 12, leading to injuries to two individuals and damage to their vehicles.
