KUCHING: After a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the highly anticipated Run for Peace (RFP) event organised by Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) Sarawak is making a comeback.
SGM secretary Linda Lam said the non-competitive and fun run aims to promote peace within communities and raise awareness about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while emphasising the importance of individual actions.
With 23 locations nationwide, including three in Sarawak, approximately 70,000 participants are expected to join Run for Peace 2023 this July.
“The RFP has been organised by SGM biennially since 2005 and has already seen the enthusiastic participation of over 360,000 peace enthusiasts,” she told a press conference at the SGM building here today.
The event serves as a platform to empower individuals with the belief that peace starts with each person and highlights the potential for positive change within society.
Inspired by the philosophy and ideals of Soka Gakkai International president Daisaku Ikeda, who has been submitting peace proposals to the United Nations since 1983, the RFP carries the spirit of the SGI’s peace movement.
This year’s RFP adopts a broader theme, incorporating the sustainability of the planet in alignment with the SDGs.
“The SDGs provide a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, both now and in the future. The additional slogan, ‘ActNOW for SDGs!’, emphasises the urgency of taking immediate action to protect the environment and build a sustainable future,” Lam added.
The run will take place on July 2 in Kuching, while the events in Miri and Sibu are scheduled for July 9. Participants can choose from various route distances, ranging from 5km to 7km, depending on the specific location.
The registration deadline is May 31, and the general public can find further information at the official Run for Peace website: https://www.runforpeace.com.my.
