KUCHING: A total of 1,008 runners brave the hazy condition to participate in the Saberkas Run 2019 at the old State Legislative Assembly (DUN) grounds here on Saturday.
The run was organised by Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas), in conjunction with Malaysia Day and was supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports.
Its minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah who flagged off the event, hoped that it will be an annual affair after making a comeback after 13 years.
“The last Saberkas run was held in 2006 and it has gone into hibernation until now.
“I do hope that the event shall be continued on an annual basis. This is a new beginning,” he said in his short remark prior to the morning workout (Zumba) and the flagging off.
The participants, dressed in yellow and black t-shirts or just in a running gear, had fun despite the unhealthy reading of the Air Pollutant Index (API). The run consists of three categories: 7KM Unity Run; 3KM family run; and 1KM special category (VIP) and finishes with a lucky draw.
The first three finishers were awarded with gold, silver and bronze medal respectively, special T-shirts and certificate each. A finisher medal was also presented to each participant.
