LUNDU: Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn has called for vigilance, especially among students, who use boats to get to school.

Speaking to the reporters after handing over the donations to the families of the victims of Sungai Batang Kayan tragedy at SMK Senibong here today, he suggested that the students studying at the school to live in dormitories.

“If they do not have any other choice, and because some of the students also live near the school, they should take ll the safety precautions.

“I believe they have also been provided with life jackets from the Federal Education Ministry (MoE) through the Lundu District Education Office.

“But of course, we can never predict or know what would happen next, so my heart breaks for the families of the victims of this tragedy,” he said.

Sagah said the boat tragedy involves quite a number of students, adding that they are the students of the younger generations.

“However, at the end of the day, only God will look after them.

“We are only human, and can only plan. We may never know what would happen after that,” he said.

In the meantime, Sagah said there is a need for more bridge and connectivity for villages not only in Lundu, but other areas of Sarawak as well.

“For instance, in Penrissen, Serian and others. This is because Sarawak is the land of many rivers, so of course there is a need for such infrastructure to be build,” he added.
