MIRI: The Saberkas Night Market, one of the popular tourist destinations here, will be upgraded this year and an allocation of RM900,000 has been set aside for the purpose, said Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang.
He said work on the project, which involved making the place more hygienic, safe and enviromental friendly, would begin this month and scheduled for completion by end March this year.
“For a start, the market will not use canvas roofing anymore because it is expensive and also not lasting,” he told reporters after visiting the project site yesterday.
Yii said once completed, the night market which has a total of 216 traders operating, would have rain water harvesting system, washing areas and a proper water discharge system to ensure its cleanliness.
Besides the night market, Yii said, the Miri City Council (MCC) was also planning to upgrade facilities at the Luak Esplanade, Taman Awam, Taman Bulatan and Miri City Fan (Taman Kipas Miri).
