KUCHING: The Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) will celebrate its Golden Jubilee anniversary in October this year.

Its president Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this is a milestone for the youth organisation, which has come far and beyond since it was established on March 19, 1973.

He also noted that Saberkas has also played a role in assisting and guiding its members, especially the youth, who are the next generation of Sarawak’s leaders.

“Saberkas has turned 50 years old today (March 19) and I am happy that we have come this far. I believe not many youth organisations have made it this far other than us in Sarawak.

“We are probably the biggest youth organisation in Sarawak and, possibly, in Malaysia as well,” said Karim during a press conference after the launch of Saberkas’s new song and the Saberkas Cergas programme at Satok Sports Complex today.

Elaborating, Abdul Karim, who is also the Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister, said that throughout the years, Saberkas has organised various programmes with its members and communities throughout the state.

In addition, the organisation, he noted, has experienced many changes, especially in attracting the youth using various ways, including the use of technologies as compared to in the past.

“The youth in the past and in the present are very different. Nowadays, our youth are intellectuals and have good academic backgrounds, so they see things very differently than in the old days.

“Thus, we have to adapt to current ways to get youth to see that Saberkas is a good organisation, where they can be developed into future leaders and be at the highest level,” he said.

He added that, for the celebration in October this year, an appreciation award ceremony will be held where they will be presented to their past members who have served well.

“We will also reveal a special logo in conjunction with the anniversary,” said the Saberkas president.

During the event, Saberkas also launched its new anthem, which Abd Karim said has the tone to uplift the spirit of its members.
