KUCHING: Amidst the current political crisis following the resignation of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as Prime Minister, Sarawakians are asking who is taking care of Sarawak’s interests.
“Now they are fighting and no one is seeing clearly. Where are Sarawak’s interests? Forgotten!” said Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian at a dinner organised by the party’s Kuching Branch at Crown Square here on Friday.
He emphasised the need to safeguard unity and interests of the state.
“Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak is still dreaming and it is time for them to wake up. Are they Sarawakians or Malayans?” questioned Sim, who is Local Government and Housing Minister.
Addressing supporters of Malaya-based parties, he urged, “If you are Sarawakians, you should champion ‘Sarawak First’ and the state’s interests.”
SUPP vice president Datuk Lily Yong who is Kuching Branch chairperson said that politics was an unreliable spectrum, but this did not matter as long as one stood strong with principles.
She noted that Padungan has been under the opposition for over a decade, and has been neglected with little development and improvement.
“We have to work hard to wrest back Padungan so that the people here can have a better tomorrow,” said Yong.
SUPP Kuching Branch deputy chairman Bong Lian Huan said instead of paying too much attention to the political goings-on in Malaya, Sarawakians should be more focused on the interests of Sarawak and the issues facing Sarawakians.
“Our focus should be on the development of the socio-economics in Sarawak and improvement in the standard of living and quality of life for the people of Sarawak,” he said.
Also present were Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions president Datuk Richard Wee, Kuching Chinese General Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Datuk Tan Jit Kee and SUPP councillors.
