KUCHING: Hawkers of Kenyalang Park Community Market are still facing security problems despite 17 closed-circuit television (CCTV) having been installed there.
Pending Assemblywoman, Violet Yong said that break-in incidents still happened although the CCTV had been installed in early May, this year.
“The break-in incidents have resulted in property losses such as gas cylinders, cigarettes, drinks, fish and other products on sale and these have caused sufferings to the hawkers here and causing frustration among the hawkers too,” she said.
Yong added that it is hoped that the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) can tighten the security more soon.
“Although you (MBKS) have installed the CCTV, it does not mean that the environment is secure enough. You must make sure the security guard is on patrol all the time.
“Now the market only has one security guard working from 2pm until 10pm and that means from 10pm until 2pm there will be no security guard working,” she said in a press conference at Kenyalang Park Community Market, yesterday.
Yong pointed out that with only tight enforcement and well functioned CCTV can crime rate be reduced.
“The break-in incidents have become more rampant as we can see that the thieves must be those that are familiar with the environtment and the angle of the CCTV.
“It is good to install CCTV, but yet the thief could not be caught. Therefore, MBKS should consider to install 360 degree CCTV that can capture the whole environment at the market,” she said.
Yong added besides that, the Local Government ministry must also take a step foward in order to provide a safe and secure environment for the community.
