KUCHING: Former Head of State, Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng who celebrated his 100th birthday today (Aug 27), wished Sarawak continued prosperity and unity.
He reminded Sarawakians not to take for granted the peace and harmony they had and to always be kind to one another irrespective of their gender and racial background.
Commenting further on the development of Sarawak thus far, he said that the state was in the good hands of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“Abang Johari cares about his people more than anyone. He is also seen as an exemplary leader because he treats everyone fairly despite their racial background,” he added.
Salahuddin was interviewed by the New Sarawak Tribune at his residence at Telaga Air today (Aug 27).
Salahuddin, who served as the Head of State from 1977 to 1981, and the second time from 2001 to 2014, in a light moment also shared the secret to his long life.
“The recipe to have a long and happy life is to always smile. I believe that smiling can bring peace and joy to one’s life,” he said.
Sharing that his favourite restaurant was After 4, he added that his longevity was due to the nutritious food that he ate daily.
“During breakfast, aside from eating steamed buns and noodles, it is a must for me to eat two half-boiled eggs. I personally prefer eating boiled food compared to oily food during my meals,” he said.
Asked about what he always did in his free time, he disclosed that he loved to go for car rides.
“I find peace when I go around Kuching City looking at its beautiful scenery,” he added.
Salahuddin is currently living with his eldest daughter in his residence. His late wife, Toh Puan Norkiah, passed away at the age of 72 in April this year.
“Though I am saddened by my wife’s passing, I still feel very blessed that I have my children here living with me and entertaining me daily.
“On top of that, with this long life granted to me, I am able to meet and play with my grandchildren and great grandchildren,” he added.
In the past, there would be big birthday celebrations organised by various parties for him. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, social events such as birthday celebrations are currently prohibited.
However, that did not dampen Salahuddin’s spirit. He said he was proud and grateful to celebrate his 100th birthday.
“My hope is that Sarawak is always safe and able to reach greater heights. Most importantly, the people of Sarawak must be humble and respect each other,” he added.
