KUCHING: ‘Raya Emas: Salako Sacred Treasure’, the first movie in the world to showcase the beliefs and culture of the Salako people of Sarawak, is set to hit the big screens on Malaysia Day (Sept 16) this year.
Tourism, Creative Industry, Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said he is proud a local movie will showcase the unique and captivating culture of the Salako people.
“The movie was shot right here in Sarawak, with 80 per cent filming in the Lundu area. With its stunning natural beauty and captivating landscapes, Lundu will undoubtedly captivate audiences and make them yearn to experience the magic of Sarawak firsthand,” he said at the launching of the movie held at Borneo Cultures Museum here on Tuesday (Feb 20).
While expressing his gratitude to the movie producers for their work of art and passion that bear testament to their commitment and dedication of all Sarawakians, Abdul Karim said the state always takes great pride in sharing its culture and spirit with the world.
“Now, we are taking it to new heights through the realms of filmmaking,” he said, adding that the state consistently attracts tourists from all over Malaysia and globally through music festivals to local cultural events.
“This time, we are embarking on a new journey, showcasing our welcoming spirit and rich heritage through the lens of cinema and the silver screen.
“Let us come together and celebrate the beauty of Sarawak, the resilience of our people, and the uplifting power of storytelling,” he said.
Abdul Karim added the making of this film is expected to further enliven the film industry in Malaysia, especially in Sarawak – renowned for its diverse heritage, culture, and local legends.
“With captivating films like this, the local legends of Sarawak will continue to endure and be immortalised in the form of movies for the enjoyment of every layer of society, including the younger generation who are the heirs of the state and the nation,” he said.
Representing the Salako community, Political Secretary to the Premier, Niponi Undek, said he believed the movie would showcase to the world the unique way of life of the Salako people and the breathtaking beauty of Lundu surroundings.
“Additionally, we envision Lundu becoming a prominent tourist destination, and this movie marks a promising beginning towards that goal,” he said.
He also hoped the movie would present an opportunity for young entrepreneurs and aspiring actors from the Salako community.
Earlier, movie director executive director Winson Voon described the movie as an action film.
“Raya Emas is actually a non-fiction movie where Raya Emas is something we created, but most importantly it features the cultures of the Salako people,” he said, adding that the budget for the film production was RM1.5 million.
He added the filming locations of the movie included around the city of Kuching and in the district of Lundu.
“Lundu is a highly potential tourist destination area with many fascinating places such as beaches, waterfalls, and the beautiful Gunung Gading National Park.
“Moreover, the most important identity that can only be found in Lundu is the culture of the Salako people. In this film, you will witness the customs and traditions of the Salako people,” he said.
With shooting completed at the end of last month, the movie is currently in the post-production stage.
