KUCHING: The Samarahan Food and Culture Festival (SFCF) 2024 will attempt to get itself into the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) with the exhibition of 70 types of various ‘ulam-ulaman’ (traditional salads).
Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Hamzah said the SFCF this time around will be held for 10 days from May 10 to 19 at Aiman Mall, Kota Samarahan.
“This has never been done before and we really like ulam. We also don’t know there are different types of ulam.
“With this, it will help to promote Sarawak with traditional food and we will also be known as a place to acquire these ‘ulam-ulaman’.
“Moreover, if this product can be publicised, farmers can plant more to sell and maybe even export it,” he said during the festival’s press conference at Baitulmakmur Building II here today.
On the festival, he said a total of 83 stalls will be set up throughout the event selling food and beverages, traditional and dry food in addition to handicraft exhibitions, automotive, banking and telecommunications, among others.
“As the festival will be held from 12 pm to 10 pm, there will be cultural event of various races every night featuring performances,” he said.
Aside from that, he added, various activities will also be held throughout the event such as a cooking competition with terubok fish, ‘ikan bulu’, and stingray; a pineapple eating party; a contemporary fashion show (children and teenagers); an aerobathon challenge, Samarahan Got Talent; Cosplay Show; coloring competition for children and the elderly; exhibition and demonstration of LV Sarawak beads and baskets; big bike gathering, auto show; and performances by guest artists.
He said the SCFC will be officiated by himself on May 10 while the closing ceremony will be completed by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
