SIBU: In an impressive debut at the 3rd Sarawak Games (SUKSAR) 2023, young weightlifter Samuel Fernandez Panas, 17, clinched two medals yesterday (Jan 15) at the Melanau Malay Association Hall here.
Hailing from Kapit, Samuel represented the central zone in the weightlifting team, securing a gold medal in the 55kg snatch category and a silver in the 55kg clean and jerk category.
“I am quite happy and satisfied with managing to secure two medals in both categories. Having my parents here watching me really ignited a spirit in me to excel in the sport,” said Samuel.
Attributing his dual victory to rigorous training, Samuel hoped his success will motivate his teammates to achieve their best.
His parents, Panas Baong and Catherine Kalat, were present to witness his outstanding performance on the opening day of the competition.
