OYA: A crocodile hunt is going on now along Oya River. It started on March 12 and will last until March 21.

The operations involving 17 men from the Sarawak Forestry Department (SFC), police (PDRM) and Sungai Oya Fishermen’s Community (as guide) is deemed necessary after four villagers lost their lives to crocodiles in the river.

Dalat and Mukah District Councilor (MDDM) and Oya fishing community leader, Arini Suhaili, explained that the police and SFC had reminded local fishermen to temporarily stop going into the river while the operations was on.

“They have been asked to avoid locations along the river where crocodiles are often seen. Additional baits will be placed at these spots.

“For the duration of the operations, the hunters will stay in Kampung Bakong Oya Community Hall which serves as the operations headquarters,” Arini told Suara Sarawak on Monday (Mar 15).

She also appealed for donations or other types of assistance such as food and drinks to help the hunters.

“Just send them directly to the community hall of Kampung Bakong Oya. Or contact SFC chief operating officer Bawing Randi directly at 0178679775,” she said.

“It is hoped that our efforts can create a safe, peaceful and sustainable environment. Cooperation from all levels of society is needed for this period.”

For future purposes, Arini hoped that a committee of volunteer crocodile hunters would be formed to make Batang Oya safer for the public.

“We will propose this during our coming meeting with the Resident’s Office, Dalat District Office, SFC chief executive officer (CEO), village heads and other community leaders.
