KUCHING: The first day of Sarawak Handball Open Championship 12th Edition of Chief Minister’s Datuk Amar Abang Haji Johari Cup (men’s) and the 7th Edition of Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi Cup (women’s) 2017 kicked off at the Sports Arena, Jalan Simpang Tiga on Tuesday.
Among the team in men’s category that stole attention were Sandakan who won 7-6 over last year’s runners-up Fame Union (B/H) in the first leg match of Group A.
X-Lion beat IPGKBL 9-3 in a Group B match while two teams from Group C – Politek and UiTM – both recorded draw results of 7-7.
Meanwhile, MJ GXY (H) recorded a comfortable 11-7 victory over Gaporian in a Group D opening match.
In the women’s category, popular choice team TMHC’s won 12-1 over Mandak B in another Group A match followed by a second major winning (10-5) by TMHC over another opponent Politek.
Meanwhile, UiTM beat IPBKBL 7-5 in the same group stage match.
The group stage matches continued until Wednesday to decide which teams advanced to the quarter-finals and semi-finals.
