MIRI: Mayor Adam Yii is concerned that sandflies are keeping people away from the many beaches here.

“We would like to see our beach clean for the public to use … in Miri we have many beaches, but unfortunately, we have a problem because we have a sand fly problem,” he said on today.

But Yii said Curtin University has proposed a collaboration with the city council to study the issue such as how to control the problem posed by sandflies.

“Of course we are very happy to work together, if we can control sand flies I believe more people will come to the beach, our beach will become more user friendly,” he said.

In a related note Yii commended the Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA) which is organising a beach clean-up at Marina Beach.

A total 231 people from 19 government agencies and non-government organisations (NGOs) have confirmed participation in the programme which will be held from 7am on March 12.

Yii said the effort complements Pantai Bayu Indah – the developer of Marina Parkcity which has been doing the same to ensure the area is clean.

Earlier, he presented a grant of RM3,000 for the beach cleaning programme.
