KUCHING: Sarawakians are urged to come down to Padang Merdeka here to celebrate Sarawak’s Independence Day tomorrow (July 22).
The event organising committee chairman Anthony David said Sarawak Association for People’s Aspiration (Sapa) was inviting members of the public to attend this year’s 722 Independence Day.
“This year’s event will be much grander compared to previous years.
“We wish to extend our gratitude to the police and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) for allowing us to hold the celebration at Padang Merdeka,” he said.
Anthony added there would be a lot of fun activities such as tug-of-war, Vespa group, big bikers, modified cars showcase and others.
Meanwhile Sapa president Dominique Ng said he was thankful to the state government’s support in allowing the celebration be held at the Padang Merdeka for the first time.
“Even St Thomas Cathedral is allowing us to park our vehicles in its compound during the day.
“This is Sarawak’s own day and we are encouraging everybody to turn up.
“The highlight of the event will be the singing of Fair Land Sarawak and raising of the Sarawak flag as it represents the state for more than 100 years.
“To us, it means a lot as when our late Tok Nan (Pehin Sri Adenan Satem) decided to declare this day as the Independence Day, it has a message to all Sarawakians and we are hearing loudly and clearly,” Ng said.
Sarawak for Sarawakians (S4S) will also be joining in the celebration with a parade starting at Song Kheng Hai ground and ending at Padang Merdeka.
