MARUDI: The Marudi Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) has launched a search and rescue (SaR) operation for 87-year-old Nyawa Unjong, who went missing from her garden at Rh. Chabop Anak Diau, Sungai Tarak, Lubok Amam Marudi.

The SaR began after Bomba received a call from the Marudi police station yesterday (June 13), at 3.27 pm.

According to the police report filed by the victim’s child, Nyawa had left home with a large basket on June 12 at 10.15 am to work in her garden. However, she did not return home later, prompting concerns and the subsequent search.

Firefighters arrived at the location at 4.05 pm. Due to the lack of cellular network coverage, the SaR team had to find an area with phone coverage to relay information back to Marudi station.

“On June 13, the initial search focused on the area surrounding Nyawa’s garden. During the search, the team discovered items believed to belong to Nyawa approximately 300 metres from the longhouse.

“The search was suspended at 5.30 pm due to fading daylight. Plans were made to resume the operation the following day,” police said.

This morning, the search efforts continued with a renewed focus on the garden area. Police and local villagers participated in the search.

Bomba has appealed for information from anyone about Nyawa’s whereabouts.
