LINGGA: A search and rescue (SAR) operation was activated on Monday (Feb 7) to locate a foreign worker feared drowned at Batang Seterap.
A spokesman from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department operations centre said the victim was identified as Thein Wai Maung, 35, from Myanmar.
Sri Aman firemen rushed to the scene after receiving an emergency call from the police at 1.10pm.
According to witnesses, the victim, who is a worker of Kapal Ketara 10, fell overboard from the vessel at 10.50am.
They tried to rescue him but failed as he was swept away by strong river currents.
Firemen and Civil Defence Force personnel carried out the search within a 10km-radius from the location where the victim was last seen up to Tanjung Lutong.
As at press time, the victim is yet to be found.
